Cleaning Tips

A Quick Way to Pick Up Cat Hair
To pick up cat hair, put on a wet rubber dishwashing glove and wipe your hand over surfaces. The hair will stick right to it.

Baking Soda as a Cleaner
Baking soda produces carbon dioxide bubbles that help dough rise and make for tender baked goods. To ensure your baking soda still has its powers, combine ½ teaspoons baking soda with 2 teaspoons vinegar. If the mixture fizzes, it’s fresh enough. If it falls flat, save the soda to scour pots and plans.

Cleaning the Bathroom for Guests
If you can clean only one room before company arrives, tackle the bathroom. This is the only room where people spend time solo and may have the time and tendency to notice a mess.

Cleaning with White Vinegar
White vinegar is great in the dishwasher when mixed with automatic dishwashing detergent. It also works well for cleaning the inside of a coffee pot. When mixed with water, it cleans the mineral spots off an iron.

Dryer Sheet as Shower Door Cleaner
After you towel off, rub a new or used dryer sheet over the inside of the wet shower door to prevent soap-scum buildup.

Easy Grill Clean Up
A clean grate prevents food from sticking. If you don’t have a wire brush on hand, crumple a sheet of foil into a ball, hold it with tongs, and use it to scrape off any bits stuck to the grate. (Do this while the grill is hot before and after cooking.)

Keep Your Cutting Board Clean
To keep your wooden cutting board free of food-borne bacteria, sprinkle coarse salt over its surface every few weeks, then rub it in with the cut side of a lemon half. Rinse with hot water and towel dry.

Milk as Shoe Shine
Moisten a cloth with milk and buff dull patent leather back to gleaming glory wihtoug the harsh polish fumes.

Milk as a Stain Pretreater
If you spill red wine on a shirt or a dress, submerge the soiled part in whole milk, squeeze out the excess immediately, then launder as usual. (If the item is dry-clean only, leave it for the pros.)

Solve Cherry Stains
To remove them and other fruit stains from washable fabric, act quickly: blot excess juice with a clean, damp cloth. Squeeze lemon juice onto the stain, wait a couple of minutes, rinse and let dry in the sun (sunlight has a bleaching effect). For big, stubborn stains, soak the fabric in a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1 tablespoon white vinegar and ½ teaspoon clear, mild dishwashing liquid for 15 minutes, then wash as directed. Make extra solution to store in a spray bottle for treating spots.
